Trine Gets Back in the Win Column with 19-1 Win at Earlham

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Trine University women's lacrosse team recorded a 19-1 victory over Earlham College on Saturday afternoon to move to 4-1 in the 2022 season. The Quakers fall to 1-3 on the year in the home loss.

The Thunder had just seven turnovers, the fewest in a game this season, and only two in the last three quarters. Trine was 17-for-18 on clear attempts and held a 57.6% shooting percentage.

It was a quick start for the Thunder as they found the back of the net five times in the first quarter. Calista Richmond [Portage, Mich. / Portage] and Liv Ghent [Byron Center, Mich. / Caledonia] scored in the first five minutes of play and Richmond scored again at the six-minute mark off a feed from Chloe Vruno [Geneva, Ill. / St. Francis]. Vruno would net a goal herself as well as one by Nikki Hibler [West Lafayette, Ind. / Harrison] to get to the 5-0 lead.

Trine would mount a 10-0 lead before Earlham got on the board. Ella Dougherty [Lowell, Mich. / Lowell] notched her first goal of the day in the first minute of action with Alyssa Keptner [Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow] following suit a few moments later. Vruno assisted on three goals in the frame, including Danielle Gargiulo's [Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove] first of the game, to give the Thunder a 13-1 halftime lead. She would finish with five in total, tied for the most assists in a game by a player in program history.

Trine would have a running clock for the entire second half as they continued to extend the advantage. Gargiulo secured three more goals over the final 20 minutes to take the team lead with four on the day. Brooke Hoag [Portage, Mich. / Portage] was true on a shot with two minutes and change left for her first score of the day to get to the 19-1 result.

Along with Gargiulo's four, Richmond, Ghent and Vruno had three goals apiece to lead the charge offensively. In net, Jillian Rejczyk [Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda] had four saves on five shots faced and Maddy Kasten [Battle Creek, Mich. / Harper Creek] played the second half and got a stick on her only shot of the game. The freshman Hoag led the team by picking up three ground balls, while classmate Courtney Rhodes [Monee, Ill. / Providence Catholic] had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

The Thunder are at home on Wednesday, March 23 for a non-conference game against the College of Wooster. That one will start at 5 pm.
