Women's Tennis Comeback Cut Short

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team came up short in a comeback attempt, dropping their final match of the season to Calvin College by the score of 6-3.

The Thunder fell behind during the doubles portion of the dual as they picked up just one of the three matches. Junior Kyra Braun (Portland, Ind. / Jay County) and freshman Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) picked up that victory in the No. 3 match by the score of 8-2.

Trailing the opposition 2-1 entering the singles portion of the dual, Trine mounted their comeback attempt during the early part of the singles matches. Freshman Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) tied the match at two with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over her opponent in the No. 1 match. Freshman Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) then gave the Thunder a lead with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 match.

The Knights stopped the comeback attempt their picking up the last four singles matches to come away with the 6-3 victory.

Trine falls to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. The record gives them their second straight fifth-place finish in conference play.
