FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team opened their season with a pair of dual match victories, both hosted by Franklin College.
The Thunder opened the day with a tight 4-3 decision against their hosts. Trine earned the first point of the contest by taking two of three doubles matches. Avery Elsworth and Addison Lockwood won the No. 2 match with a score of 6-4 while Cali Mickley and Chloe Hilvers won the No. 3 match 6-1.
Elsworth, Mickley and Hilvers all ended the dual undefeated by winning their singles matches. Elsworth competed in the second match and won in convincing fashion with scores of 6-0, 6-1. Mickley took the first set of the No. 4 match 6-0 and finished the win with a 6-4 second. Hilvers won her first set 6-3, but needed a tiebreaker to win the No. 5 match with a second set score of 7-6 (7-1).
Trine then swept Webster University for their second win of the season. Playing with the same pairings, the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams each won 6-1. Emma Beehler and Anna Wesley picked up their first win of the year with a 6-3 victory in the top match.
Elworth again had the most convincing singles win, taking the No. 2 match 6-0, 6-1. Finishing second was Lockwood who took the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-1. Mickley had a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 3 match and Beehler won in the top match 6-2, 6-4.
Hilvers needed another tiebreaker but won the No. 4 match 7-6(7-1), 6-2. Wesley went to a super where she won 10-8 to secure the No. 6 match 6-4, 4-6, 1-0.
The Thunder finish the day 2-0. They will return to the courts when they travel to face Taylor (Ind.) University on Tuesday, September 15. That contest is set to start at 4 p.m.
