ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team took Indiana University East right to the wire but came up just short in a 4-3 loss. Four matches featured some amount of tiebreakers.
The Thunder took the doubles portion of the day to earn the first team point. Cali Mickley and Chloe Hilvers won the No. 3 match with a score of 6-1. Avery Elsworth and Addison Lockwood won the No. 2 match, but needed the first tiebreaker of the day to do so. The final score of the match was 7-6 (10-8).
The first four singles matches were split between the two teams. Emma Beehler won the top match with scores of 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Elsworth followed up with a super tiebreaker loss in the No. 2 match with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 5-10. Mickley gave the team their third point by winning the No. 4 match 6-4, 6-0.
After a loss by Lockwood in the No. 6 match, the match came down to the No. 5 match up and Hilvers. Hilvers lost the first set but won a tiebreaker to take the second and force the super tiebreaker. She ultimately fell with scores of 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 3-10.
The Thunder fall to 3-2 after the loss. Members of the team will next compete when they travel to the ITA Regionals hosted by Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich. That tournament begins on Friday, September 25.
