Women's Tennis Narrowly Defeated by Saint Mary's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team traveled to face Saint Mary's College in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener and came up just short as the lost 6-3.

The Thunder picked up the No. 1 doubles match to start the competition, as freshman teammates Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) took the match 8-6. The team barely missed out on another point in the doubles in the No. 2 match where they lost just 8-6. Trine left the doubles portion of the day trailing the Belles 2-1.

In the singles matches, the Thunder picked up two more points and came just short of another. Spirrison went undefeated again as she took the No. 1 match with scores of 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 6 match, freshman Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) picked up the win 7-5, 6-1. The team almost picked up another win in the No. 3 match where Saint Mary's needed a super tiebreaker to defeat junior Kyra Braun (Portland, Ind. / Jay County) with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 10-2.

Trine falls to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play following the loss. They will host Adrian College on Tuesday, April 2 for their next dual match of the season. The contest is set to begin at 4 p.m.
