Box Score ANGOLA, Ind.-- A superb defensive effort led the Trine men's lacrosse team to a 6-2 victory over Calvin in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.
The Thunder forced the Knights into 28 turnovers, while Trine defenders were responsible for causing a season-high 20 of those miscues. The Thunder outshot Calvin by a 46-20 margin. When the Knights were able to get looks at the net, Travis Lores (Kildeer, Ill. / Lake Zurich) was there to make nine saves and notch his best save percentage of the year. Trine improved to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA with the victory. Calvin falls to 5-6 overall, 0-2 in conference play.
Leading the defensive effort with three caused turnovers apiece were Colin O'Keefe (Gurnee, Ill. / Warren Township), Nik Sucevic (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams), Jordan Backer (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) and Alex Jamieson (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead). The work of the Thunder defenders led Trine to holding the Knights scoreless in four extra-man opportunities.
Kevan Barissi (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) scored two goals to pace the Thunder offensive attack. It was Barissi's second multi-goal effort of the season. Jake Ahearn (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville), Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove South), Eric Peal (Imperial, Mo. / Seckman) and Jordan Lelito (West Chicago, Ill. / West Chicago) also contributed goals.
Michael Winkler scored both goals for the Knights. Chris Griffin picked up the assist on each tally. Travis Parece made 14 saves in net.
Winkler got Calvin on the board at with 9:12 on the clock in the first quarter, but the Thunder answered with a pair of goals to take the lead by the end of the first quarter. Barissi tied the score, before a goal by Carlquist put Trine up 2-1.
Lelito scored off a nice feed from Brian Orr (Lombard, Ill. / Montini Catholic) to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead. Winkler's second goal from Griffin cut the score to 3-2, but that was as much as the Knights would get. Lores stopped all six shots on goal he faced over the final 35:57 of action.
Barissi's second unassisted tally of the game opened the scoring in the second half. Peal scored his second career goal, and his second goal in as many games off a pass sent in front by Daniel William Shine (Chicago, Ill. / Lane College Prep). Ahearn added an unassisted tally with 4:35 to play in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Trine will look to extend its winning-streak to three when the Thunder travel to Adrian for a matchup on Wednesday, Apr. 20. Face-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
