CINCINNATI - It was a
hard-fought victory for the Trine University women's lacrosse
team as they went on the road and defeated Midwest Women's
Lacrosse Conference foe Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) 11-10. The win
improves the Thunder to 2-5 on the season and 3-2 in the MWLC.
The Lions scored the first four goals of the
game, before senior Emily Shreeve (Manchester, Md./North
Carroll) ended the streak at 16:54 on an assist by sophomore
Lauren Hood (Austintown, Ohio/Mineral Ridge)and
started a scoring streak for the Thunder. Trine would score the
next five goals as fellow senior Ashley Kocsis (Cincinnati,
Ohio/Anderson) scored less than a minute later.
Shreeve would add another goal at 12:55 on an
assist by Kocsis, before senior Shelly Raupp (Vernon Hills,
Ill./Vernon Hills) score two goals just 35 second apart. The
Lions would tie the score just 18 seconds later before Raupp capped
off the half, giving the Thunder the 6-5 lead at intermission.
Junior Emily Canepa (West Chester,
Ohio/Lakota West) pushed Trine's lead to two, scoring
the first goal of the second half. MSJ would score again, but
Shreeve would be there to answer back for the Thunder with 17:22 to
go.
The Lions re-took the lead with 11:34 to play
after scoring three consecutive goals.
Back-to-back goals by Shreeve and Raupp gave
Trine the lead back with 5:12 to play but the Lions refused to go
quietly. MSJ tied the game with 3:24 to go on a free position
shot.
It came down to the final minute, but it was
Canepa that would win it for the Thunder as she scored with just
1:04 to go in the game on a free position shot, despite being a
player down due to a penalty. The Thunder defense stepped up big as
Canepa won the ensuing draw control and didn't allow the
Lions to attempt a shot in the final minute.
Raupp and Shreeve had outstanding games as they
each scored four goals. Canepa added two goals while Kocsis scored
one and assisted on another. Kocsis had a game-high five
groundballs while Canepa led the Thunder with three draw
controls.
Freshman goalie Grace Garrett (Carmel,
Ind./Carmel) made five saves in net, while picking up three
groundballs and causing a team-high three turnovers.
The Lions held a slim 33-32 shot margin for the
game, while the Thunder picked up 18 groundballs compared to 13 for
MSJ. Trine committed fewer turnovers than the Lions (27-15), but
MSJ dominated the craw controls taking 17-6.
Trine will go back out on the road as they travel
to Wisconsin to take on Carthage College on April 28 for a 4:00
p.m. (est.) game.
