ANGOLA, Ind. - The
Trine women's tennis team fell in a very tight match to
Alma College in their conference opener by a score of 5-4. The
Thunder are now 3-5 on the season.
The Thunder fell into an early hole by dropping
all three doubles matches to Alma. Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh,
Ind./Castle) and Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) fell at
first doubles 8-2. Then Chrissy Uphaus (Centerville,
Ind./Centerville) and Samantha Willmann (Anderson, Ind./Frankton)
lost a hard fought second doubles match 9-7. Third doubles also
lost a very close match as Erin Kwaske (Jackson,
Mich./Western) and Kaylynne Goeglein (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) fell
8-6.
Trine had a much better performance when the
singles matches began. Huhnke headed the attempt at a comeback as
she won at first singles 6-1, 6-0. Schlueter then won a battle at
third singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Freshman Erin Kwaske won at fourth
singles 7-6 (4), 6-2 and Susan Breinling (Fremont, Mich./Faith
Christian) won at sixth singles by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The
Lady Thunder dropped the second singles match as Uphaus lost 6-0,
7-6 (3).
The deciding match came at fifth singles as
Willmann dropped the first set 3-6, took the second set 6-2, but
lost the third set 3-6.
The ladies' next match will be at 4:00 p.m. on
March 27th as they travel to rival Adrian College.
