SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. – The Trine University men's golf team finished second at the MIAA Spring Finale this afternoon at HawksHead Golf Course.
Garrett James and
Jake Bilby finished fourth with 144 strokes across the 36-hole tournament. The Thunder finish the season second in the MIAA Standings behind conference champions Calvin University.
The Knights claimed the MIAA Championship by six strokes over Trine. The conference champion is determined by the team with the lowest total team strokes over the four fall MIAA Jamborees and the 36-hole MIAA Spring Finale.
Bilby carded a round of 69 strokes this afternoon to rally up eight spots on the leader board. He played the front nine at three under with birdies on two, seven, and nine. He countered a bogey on ten with another birdie on twelve and finished with five consecutive pars. His round of 75 featured birdies on eight, nine, and ten with ten more pars on the day. Bilby was named to the All-MIAA second team.
James carded a 74 this afternoon with birdies on two, six, and seventeen. James opened day one with eight consecutive pars and was bogey free through his first 12. He made birdie on six and nine. He added two more on eleven and fourteen. James was named to the All-MIAA first team.
Lance Decker and
Jack Besner finished tied for tenth with rounds of 148. Besner finished one under through the front nine this afternoon with birdie on hole two. Besner carded a 77 on day one with a pair of birdies. The sophomore earned second team All-MIAA honors.
Decker fired a round of 73 on day one with birdies on one, three, and nine. The freshman made four birdies on day one including consecutively on eleven, twelve, and thirteen.
Carter Schnipke became Trine's all time leader in rounds played with 81 career rounds. The senior closed out an exceptional career with a round of 152 and second team All-MIAA honors.
