ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's golf team posted the second best 36-hole score in program history to claim the A.C. Eddy Spring Invitational. The Thunder tallied 579 strokes across two days at Zollner Golf Course and Glendarin Hills Golf Club.
Jake Bilby led Trine with 143 strokes and claimed medalist honors.
Calvin University finished second with 600 strokes, the Thunder "B" team was third with 602 strokes, Capital University was fourth with 615 and Adrian College took fifth with 620.
Bilby played Zollner to a level par on Friday, nailing five birdies, including back-to-back on holes two and three. He came back this morning and shot another round of par, this time on Glendarin Hills. He made three birdies and twelve pars and led off his day with birdie on two of his first three holes.
Garrett James stole the show on Friday with a round of 67, he strung together eight pars after a bogey on his second hole, the momentum really started rolling on hole seven, a 537-yard uphill par five. James eagled the hole to move to one-under, back to back birdies at nine and ten lowered his scored to three-under. He birdied two of his final three holes to close out a round of four-under. James made two birdies this morning to finish out his two day total of 144.
Lance Decker tied James for second overall. He played Zollner to even par with three birdies and thirteen pars. His round of 73 today earned him the tie for second place. He carded three more birdies this afternoon.
Carter Schnipke added Trine's fourth score this weekend with a two day total of 148 strokes. He shot even par at Zollner with two birdies and fourteen pars. He added three more birdies this afternoon for a score of 77.
Myles Secor led the Thunder "B" team with a total of 145 strokes. He went bogey free at Zollner of Friday for a round of 67, tied for fifth best in program history.
The Thunder will now focus their preparation on the MIAA Spring Finale on April 29 and 30. The Thunder hold a two stroke lead over Calvin University currently. The conference champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
