PORTAGE, Mich. – The Trine University men's golf team won its second tournament in three days on Monday afternoon at the Moors Golf Club. The Thunder claimed the Steven Tyler Memorial, hosted by Kalamazoo College, by 14 strokes. Six of seven Thunder placed inside the top 11.
Trine tallied 296 strokes on the day, just eight shots over par. NAIA foes Spring Arbor, Cornerstone, and Lourdes finished ahead of the host Hornets, who rounded out the top five. SAU's Zachary Koch took medalist honors with a round of 70 (-2).
Right behind him were
Carter Schnipke and
Vance Jarvis in a tie for second place. Schnipke led the Thunder quartet with a round of 71, he made five birdies on the afternoon including four on the front nine. Schnipke best holes three, six, seven, and eight and played the front nine at two under par. He added another on fourteen and finished with four consecutive pars.
Jarvis played as an individual and also shot a 71. Like Schnipke, he made five birdies, though Jarvis did his damage on the second nine. He bookended the nine with birdies on ten and eighteen and made back-to-back on fourteen and fifteen.
Jack Besner carded a round of 73 and found the hole early four separate times. Besner made birdie on three, five, and twelve and made eagle on the 544-yard par-five seventh. The sophomore placed fifth.
Jake Bilby posted a round of 75 and finished seventh. He made seven consecutive pars on holes twelve through eighteen and made birdie on one, three, and eleven.
Lance Decker scored Trine's fourth score with a 77 and a tenth place finish. He made 13 pars and birdie on hole ten.
Garrett James placed 11
th with a round of 78.
Myles Secor also played as an individual and placed 22
nd with an 81. Trine made 20 birdies across 13 different holes.
The Thunder host the A.C. Eddy Spring Classic on Friday and Saturday at Zollner Golf Course and Glendarin Hills Golf Club.
