CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Trine University men's wrestling team had six members place at the Wabash Invite. Julante Hinton led the program with a runner up finish in the 197 bracket.
Hinton opened the day with a 7-3 decision over his opponent from the University of Indianapolis before winning his semifinal match with a pin against a host institution grappler. He dropped a 10-3 decision in the championship match to a Division I caliber wrestler.
Tommy Miller had the next best finish at 141 where he came in third. Miller won his first two matches of the day, the first with a 17-0 tech fall and the other a 13-9 decision. After a loss in the semifinals, he won his final two contests, both by tech fall, to secure third place.
At 184 a pair of Thunder had strong finishes. Gavin Malone opened with a pair of wins, both by fall, before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss in the semifinals. He defeated Andrew Williamson with a fall, reaching the third-place match where he came up short in a major decision. Williamson won his first match of the day before falling to the consolation bracket where he won two straight before falling to Malone. He finished the day with a win by fall in the fifth-place match.
Nayl Sbay finished sixth at 174. He won his first match with a tech fall before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss. He won two straight by fall before dropping his final two matches of the day to finish sixth. CJ Briner also finished sixth in his 149 bracket. He won his first match before dropping his final three to finish in sixth.
The Thunder return to dual match competition when they next take to the mats. They will travel to Alma College on Thursday, February 5. That match is set to start at 7 p.m.
