Thunder Compete at Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Trine University men's wrestling team traveled to the Wabash Invite where eight members of the team placed in their respective brackets. Philip Burney and Austin Crowder led the way for the team on the day.

Burney competed at 165 where he started in the quarterfinal round. He won his first match by fall before dropping the semifinal to an athlete from Indiana University. He responded with a tech fall victory in the third place match, 16-1, to finish in third.

Crowder also turned in a third-place finish for the team, one of three members of the team to place at 157. Crowder opened the day with pin and then a 15-9 decision to reach the semifinal round. He dropped the third-place match after a 7-3 loss, before taking third with no contest over Lakin Webb. Webb reached the third place match after a 2-1 decision and a pin sent him to the semifinal round. Manny Frederick also competed at 157 finishing sixth. He had wins by tech fall and major decision to wrestle all the way back after an opening round loss.

At 149, Christopher Briner finished fourth with his lone victory coming in the quarterfinal round by major decision. Gavin Malone also took fourth in his class of 184. His win came by sudden victory during the quarterfinal round. Ben Edwards was the final member of the team to take fourth, winning his open match at 133 with a 12-5 decision.

The final placer for the team came at 125 from Karrington Cooper who took fifth. He opened the day with a loss before winning three straight matches to secure the fifth-place finish. He had wins by major decision, pin and tech fall along the way.

The Thunder return to conference dual matches when they next take the mats. They will host Alma College for the final home event of the season on Thursday, February 6. That match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
