Trine Struggles Against League's Top Team

Box Score

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team battled Hope College on Tuesday night and came up short 13-5. The Thunder fall to 7-9 overall and 1-4 inside the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) while the Flying Dutch are 11-3 and remain unbeaten at 5-0 in the league.

The loss drops Trine out of contention for the postseason, but they have one game left to play at Kalamazoo College on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.

Kramer Zastrow got the home team on the board first with an unassisted goal with 12:54, but Hope would counter with one of their own less than one minute later. The same goal scorer would add a second and third goal in the quarter to make it 3-1 after 15 minutes.

Aidan Kubiak got the second quarter started on a good note with a score to cut the deficit to 3-2. Four straight goals went to the Flying Dutch to allow the visitors to take a commanding 7-2 lead into halftime.

A man up opportunity turned into a goal for the Thunder by Will Gonia with an assist to Zastrow and Zastrow would record another goal himself a few minutes later to give Trine some life at 7-4 at the halfway point in the period. However, a late run by Hope included a trifecta of goals with less than three minutes to play increased their lead to 10-4.

Collin Custer continued the trend by scoring the first goal of the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as the Flying Dutch went on to win 13-5.

Hope held a 47-25 difference in shots, but that allowed Nick DiPaolo (7-8) to make 18 saves to tie his season-high. The Thunder turned the ball over 22 times compared to 13 for the Flying Dutch. Jack Konicek was 9-of-22 in the faceoff circle and picked up a team-high eight ground balls. Danny Kelly was responsible for three caused turnovers on the night.
