Thunder Sixth at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – The Trine University men's wrestling team finished sixth out of the 12 teams that competed at the 2024 BW Invite hosted by Baldwin Wallace University.

The Thunder grapplers captured 89 points for the team to secure sixth place. West Liberty University came in fifth with 126.5 points while the hosting Yellowjackets won with 187.5.

Philip Burney led the way for the team with another top-two finish in the 165 pound bracket. The senior opened his day with a pair of major decisions, one 8-0 against Roger Deck of Mount St. Joseph University and the other 11-3 against Marty Landes of Case Western Reserve University. In the semifinal round, Burney won with a pin at the 6:28 mark. He fell in the championship bout to finish as runner up.

At 157, Lakin Webb earned finished fourth for the next best result for the Thunder. The junior lost his first match, quickly moving into the consolation side of the bracket. He went on to win his next four matches to earn a spot in the third-place match, facing a rematch against Mitchell Betz of Manchester University. For the second time in the tournament the Spartan came up with the win and Webb finished fourth.

Tommy Miller took fifth in his bracket, competing as a 141 pounder for the day. He won his first three matches, twice with decisions and another with a tech fall, to reach the semifinal round of the competition. Two straight losses sent him to the fifth-place match where he won by forfeit.

Gavin Malone won the seventh-place match at 184, going 3-2 for the day with wins by tech fall, pin and no contest. Both Karrington Cooper at 125 and Ben Edwards at 133 took home eighth place finishes to round out the heavy scoring for the Thunder.

Trine will return to dual competition when they travel to the Kalahari Duals in Sandusky, Ohio. The day of competition is scheduled for Saturday, December 14.
