MLAX Loses MIAA Contest Against Albion

ALBION, MICH.  --  The Trine University men's lacrosse team fell on the losing end of a 19-5 decision against Albion (Mich.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at Alumni Field in Albion, Mich.

Sophomore Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio/Lakota East) and senior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) were the leading point scorers for Trine in the game with both scoring a pair of goals for two points each.  Senior Tyler Corless (St Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) scored the other Thunder goal and sophomore Zach Anderson (Crestwood, Ill./Oak Forest) was credited with an assist to round out the point scorers on the afternoon.

In net, senior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) and freshman Nick DiPaolo (Flemington, N.J./Immaculate) split time at goalkeeper with Marasco getting the start and played the entire first half and had four saves.  DiPaolo played the third and fourth quarters and tallied 18 saves in 30 total minutes.

Defensively, senior Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) and senior Adam Burton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) both had two caused turnovers to lead the team and sophomore Jack Konicek (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) had a game-high eight ground balls.

Albion (8-1, 1-0 MIAA) took a sizeable lead early by scoring nine goals in the first quarter and held Trine (2-4, 1-1 MIAA) scoreless in the first 15 minutes.  The two teams then exchanged a pair of goals in the second period with Douglas scoring Trine's first goal at the 8:02 mark which was followed by Zanichelli's first goal of the game with a little under six minutes to go in the half.  Zanichelli's goal was the final score of the quarter as Trine trailed, 11-2, at the break.

The Britons scored the only goals of the third quarter and found the back of the net five times to extend the margin to 16-2 heading into the fourth quarter.  Corless tallied the first goal of the final period with 11:19 remaining.  Albion then added three straight goals before the final goals of the game came off the sticks of Douglas and Zanichelli, but it was Albion who came out on top by the final of 19-5.

Trine will travel to Adrian, Mich. for a conference matchup against Adrian College on Tuesday, Apr. 6.  The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
