Men's Lacrosse Defeats Kalamazoo, 12-10

Box Score

ANGOLA, IND.  --  The Trine University men's lacrosse team recorded its second-straight victory with a 12-10 win against Kalamazoo (Mich.) College this afternoon in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.

The Thunder (4-4, 3-1 MIAA) put up seven goals in the first quarter that included a streak of five straight to end the period.  Sophomore Noah Markus (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and senior Jarod Schepp (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) both scored a pair of goals in the quarter.  Kalamazoo (0-8, 0-2 MIAA) struck for two scores of its own in the first 15 minutes, but Trine would boast a 7-2 advantage heading into the second frame.

Schepp got the scoring started in the second quarter with his third marker of the game with 13:43 left to play in the half.  The Schepp goal turned out to be the lone goal of the period for Trine as KZOO added a pair of scores to end the scoring and made it an 8-4 game at halftime.

The two teams traded goals throughout the third quarter with the Hornets having a slight scoring edge, 3-2, for the quarter.  Trine's two scores came of the sticks of senior Tyler Corless (St Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) and Schepp (his fourth of the game) setting up the Thunder with a 10-7 advantage heading into the final period.

All of the scoring in the fourth came in the last six-and-a-half minutes starting with a pair of goals by KZOO that narrowed the gap to 10-9.  Trine then recorded back-to-back goals of its own to answer the Hornets that included a man-up goal by senior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) and then another score by Corless that put the Thunder back out in front by three goals, 12-9.  KZOO went on to add a final goal at the 2:43 mark, but was held scoreless the rest of the way preserving the 12-10 victory for Trine.

Schepp finished with four goals and an assist to lead all scorers on the afternoon.  Corless finished with two goals and assisted on another for three total points and Markus ended the day with two goals for two points.

Senior Brandon Matuszczak (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd), freshman Collin Custer (Spanaway, Wash./Bethel), Zanichelli and sophomore Jack Konicek (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) each scored a goal to round out the point scorers.

Defensively, seniors Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) and Keith McCowan (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) both had a pair of caused turnovers to lead the team.  Konicek had a game-high eight ground balls and Zanichelli was second with seven.

Senior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) played the entire game in net for Trine and picked up the win after making six saves in 60 minutes of playing time.

Trine is scheduled to travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. next Saturday (Apr. 17) for a matchup against Calvin University.  The two teams are set to square off at 3 p.m.
