Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. -- A flurry of early goals by Hope College was too much of an obstacle for the Trine University women's soccer team who would fall in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament final by the score of 3-1.
The Flying Dutch started the scoring quickly in the contest converting on a pair of corner kick attempts both coming in the first five minutes of the contest.
Down 2-0, the Thunder settled in and began to pressure the opposition offensively. It took 20 minutes, but after working the way up the side the team received a throw in in the offensive end. Junior Andrea Wright (Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield) took the throw which would reach freshman Bella Mabry (Oregon, Ohio / Clay) who worked her way deeper into the offensive zone.
Mabry's pass into the penalty found classmate Teresa Ashbrook (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) who was in between the Flying Dutch defenders and fired a shot past the keeper into the lower right corner of the net. The goal extends Ashbrook's record single-season total to 17 and pulled the team back within one at 2-1.
The team continued to pressure Hope, but another corner attempt for the opposition led to another goal on the board and Trine entered the half trailing 3-1.
Despite both team's efforts neither was able to score in the second half and 45 minutes later the score would go final.
Nonetheless, the runner-up finish caps the program's best season since joining the NCAA and MIAA. They sit with 15 total victories, a program record, and having advanced to the MIAA final for the first time. The loss puts the Thunder at an overall record of 15-4-2.
Trine sits at fourth in the latest NCAA Region VIII rankings, giving them a chance at a berth in the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship despite today's loss. The championship field is scheduled to be released on Monday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
