Van Huis Wins Twice, Men's Track Third at MIAA Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Trine University men's track and field team finished third at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon at Hope College.
 
Trine placed third with 116 points, well ahead of the rest of the competition. Calvin University claimed the team title with 238 points while Hope College was second with 215 points. The University of Olivet was fourth with 71 points and Albion College rounded out the top five.
 
Max Van Huis claimed a pair of event wins in the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs. His winning times were 14:59.06 and 31:49.43.
 
Braden Estep took fourth in the 100-meter dash and Corey Washington was eighth. Estep claimed fourth in the 200-meter dash as well with Kyle Redd taking seventh. Redd was third in the 400-meter dash.
 
Cole Figg took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.32 seconds.
 
Nolan Grant and Brady Millington took fourth and sixth in the 800-meter run. Millington added a seventh place showing in the 1500-meter run.
 
Eli Shoup and Zack Gaynor took second and third in the 3000-meter steeplechase finishing in 9:45.51 and 9:47.94.
 
Ryan Hoopingarner placed sixth and third in the 5000- and 10,000-meters while Nicholas Spielman was third in the 5000.
 
Trace Stookey had scoring efforts in three throwing events, highlighted by a second place effort in the hammer throw. His toss of 52.65 meters/172' 9" is good for seventh best in program history. He placed seventh in shot put and eighth in discus. Colten Zableckis had a second place showing in the shot put with a toss of 14.50m/47' 7". Zableckis finished seventh in the hammer throw. James Wordleman and Hunter Eifert finished sixth and eighth in the javelin throw.
 
Preston Nofziger was second in the pole vault clearing 4.36m/14' 3.5" and Isaiah Freewalt added a personal best of 4.06m/13' 3.75" for seventh place.
 
Tyler Barnes took seventh in the long jump covering 6.45m/21' 2".
 
The Thunder now turn their attention to NCAA Championships qualifying marks over the next two weeks. The top 22 performers in each event and top 16 relays will qualify for the championships hosted by Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 21-23.
