Hackney, Spirrison and Yin earn All-MIAA status

Three from Men's Tennis Recognized by MIAA

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced the 2026 men's tennis end of year awards with three different student-athletes representing Trine University. Sammy Yin received the Dr. Lawrence Green Award and second team All-MIAA status, Drew Hackney earned first team status and Andrew Spirrison came in on second team.

Yin becomes the sixth Thunder student athlete to earn the Dr. Lawrence Green Scholar Athlete Award, which is honors a senior men's tennis player who has lettered for at least two years while demonstrating exceptional academic and athletic achievement.  It is named in the memory of longtime Hope College tennis coach Dr. Lawrence Green.

The Ada, Mich. native is set to graduate from Trine with a Biology major on the Physician Assistant track while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He has earned both Intercollegiate Tennis Association and MIAA Scholar-Athlete recognition while also landing on the President's List every semester. During his tennis career Yin established Trine's single-season winning percentage record at 19-2 and compiled an overall singles record of 25-10 and doubles record of 27-7. He was a three-time MIAA Athlete of the Week selection and earned First Team All-MIAA honors in 2024, helping lead the Thunder to their first share of the MIAA title that same season.

This season Yin earned second team All-MIAA honors after spending the season as the team's No. 2 singles player. He went 7-8 overall and 4-3 in MIAA singles matches. During double's play he, along with Spirrison, served as the top pairing. They finished the year 14-6 together and 4-3 in conference play.

Individually, Spirrison, a native of Fishers, Ind., went 4-3 in conference singles matches, serving as the No. 3 player for the team. Overall he went 13-6. This is his fourth appearance on the All-MIAA list, all coming on second team.

Hackney earned his second first team All-MIAA selection after serving as the team's top singles player. The sophomore from Norton Shores, Mich., is 16-5 overall and 5-2 in MIAA play. During doubles he was joined by Emmett Wirth as the No. 2 team where they went 4-3 in MIAA play and 14-6 overall.

Trine finished the regular season 4-3 in MIAA play and after winning their MIAA Tournament quarterfinal match against Adrian College they sit with a 15-6 overall record. They are set to travel to Kalamazoo College for the semifinals later today, Wednesday, April 29. That dual is set to start at 4 p.m.
