ELKHART, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team rolled into the semifinal match of the 2026 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament presented by Collegiate Credit Union. They swept Adrian College in a 4-0 dual.
Both teams had to overcome a last minute venue change when afternoon storms forced the teams to travel to Eastlake Elkhart in Elkhart, Indiana for indoor courts access. More local facilities were unavailable due to upcoming commencement ceremonies.
The Thunder were unbothered by the change taking the first point of the game with two wins in the doubles portion of the contest. Andrew Spirrison and Sammy Yin won the top match 6-2 before Drew Hackney and Emmett Wirth took the No. 2 match 6-3. Landon Bassett and Asher Monson were well on their way to a win in the third match, with a 5-3 score, but it went unfinished due to MIAA tournament rules.
The top three singles players each won to secure the dual and the team's place in the next round of the tournament. Yin finished first taking the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-3 with Hackney following behind with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 1 match. Spirrison finished the dual with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 3 match. Leyton Byler was ahead in his contest with scores of 6-2, 3-2, but it went unfinished as well.
Trine finishes the day 15-6 overall. They will now turn their sights to Thursday, April 29 when they will travel to face top-seeded Kalamazoo College for a semifinal match. That dual is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
