ERIE, Pa. – The Trine University acrobatics & tumbling team picked up a split during their second competition of the season. In a tri-match event, the team finished second with a score of 193.765. The hosts from Gannon University won the day with 258.305 while Buffalo State University came third with 186.585.
Despite the final score, the Thunder trailed both opponents following the opening Compulsory Event with a score of 24.80. Gannon posted a score of 37.5 and the Bengals came in at 25.15. The team's best score came in the toss where the judges handed them an 8.50. They also had an 8.20 in the pyramid.
Trine roared back during the Acro Event, scoring 23.35 to Buffalo States 21.55. The Golden Knights won the event with a 27.40. The team's best scores came in the first heat with 8.60 and the third heat with 8.20. Both of those scores are a season best for the team.
The Thunder again finished ahead of Buffalo State during the Pyramid Event, posting a score of 25.40 to 24.55. Gannon scored 29.15. Trine's best score came in the open heat with a 9.05 but they also turned in a strong 8.80 in the inversion heat.
Out of the halftime break, the Bengals gained on the Thunder in the Toss Event. Trine finished with an even score of 20 while Buffalo State had 20.55. The Golden Knights finished with 26.85 points. Trine's best score in the event came in the first heat with a 7.40.
While Gannon once again cruised during the Tumbling Event with a 50.125, Trine took back the half point they lost against Buffalo State, scoring 35.575 to 35.275. The Thunder's best score came in the six element pass where they had a 7.475. They also turned in a season best 6.425 in the aerial pass.
Trine scored 64.64 in the team event to secure the second-place finish.
Trine finishes the day with a 2-1 record. They will open the home portion of their schedule when they next take the mats, hosting East Texas Baptist University and Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday, March 13. That tri-match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
