MARSHALL, Mich. – The Trine University women's golf team took the lead in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings this afternoon with a second place finish at MIAA Jamboree #2 at The Medalist Golf Course. Trine tallied 316 strokes, just behind Saint Mary's College with 312.
Rylee Smith was Trine's top individual, she placed fifth with 76 strokes.
Kalamazoo College entered the day with the lead in the conference standings which is determined by total team strokes in conference events. The Hornets dropped to fourth and were replaced by the Thunder who have totaled 316 strokes in both Jamborees. Trine now holds a four stroke lead over Saint Mary's and Hope College.
Smith carded a 76 by way of 13 pars and a birdie. Her birdie came on hole five after a bogey on hole three. Her birdie moved her back to even par where she remained through the first ten holes of the day. Smith is now ranked second in the conference, just one stroke behind Melanie Maier of Saint Mary's.
Natalie Kulka placed seventh with a 78, a string of bogeys looked set to spoil her day but two birdies in the final six holes helped her rally up the leaderboard. She made the pair on holes ten, a 383-yard par four, and twelve, a 152-yard par three.
Kayleigh Agugliaro was 11
th individually with an 80. She made par on 11 of her last 13 holes for a strong showing.
Cassidy Hawken shot an 82 as she was the Thunder's fourth counter. She made birdies on one and eleven, both par fours of 295 and 271 yards.
The third of four fall jamborees is up next for the Thunder. This time they travel to Gull Lake Country Club on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
