Smith Leads Way for Women's Golf At IU East Invitational

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Trine University women's golf team turned in a fifth-place result at the IU East Fall Invitational. Rylee Smith highlighted the event for the team, coming in second as an individual.

The hosts from Indiana University East won the event with a score of 622 strokes. Grace College (628), Huntington (Ind.) University (630) and Saint Mary's of the Woods College (631) followed in the standings. The Thunder finished with 643 strokes, a full 41 strokes before the next team in the standings.

Smith opened the two-day event with a score of 78 strokes on Friday, finishing the first 18 holes two strokes out of the lead. Today she shaved four strokes off that score coming in with a 74 to finish just eight over par for the tournament with 152 strokes. She stayed just two strokes out of the top spot.

The rest of the delegation from Trine finished tightly clumped between 21st and 28th, separated by just three strokes. Grace Thiele who played as an individual ended up leading the group with a two day score of 163. She played her best golf on Friday with 78 strokes.

Among the starting five, Natalie Kulka came in second with 164 strokes. She played two stead rounds, with an 83 on Friday and an 81 Saturday. Kayleigh Agugliaro and Brooke Anderson tied for 26th at the event with 165 strokes each. Cassidy Hawken rounded out the team with a score of 166.

The Thunder return to the links when they travel to the Kyle Campbell Invitational, hosted by The University of Olivet, next weekend for another two-round event. Day one at the Medalist Golf Club is scheduled to be played on Friday, September 5.
