Men's Golf Fourth on Day One of MIAA Spring Final

COLDWATER, Mich. – Two Trine University men's golfers finished inside the top 10 on day one of the MIAA Spring Finale. Jake Bilby and Trevor Vietti each shot three over 75s to finish tied for sixth. The Thunder sit fourth as a team and are 12 shots back of the leaders, Calvin University.
 
Bilby opened his round with two birdies on the first five holes and finished the front nine at level par. His birdies came on the 552-yard par five third and the 396-yard par four fifth. He added another in sixteen, a 416-yard par four. He added seven pars on the back nine to complete a strong showing.
 
Vietti is competing as an individual, his score does not count toward the Trine team total but he can claim the individual title. He scored birdie on five and fifteen, the latter a 535-yard par five. He made five consecutive pars on holes six through ten. All told, he carded 10 pars on the day. He and Bilby are four shots behind the leader Cameron Bozyk of Adrian College.
 
Carter Schnipke is tied for fourteenth after day one with a six-over 78. Schnipke closed well on the front nine with six pars and a birdie on the 501-yard par five ninth.
 
Garrett James is also tied for fourteenth he sunk eight pars on the front nine and five more on the back.
 
Jack Besner is 23rd after shooting 80 on Wednesday afternoon. He made birdie on the 213-yard par three twelfth.
 
Asher Caldwell had the best hole of the day for Trine, he made eagle on the ninth hole and added a birdie on eighteen, a 422-yard par four to highlight his round.
 
Trine will complete the MIAA Spring Final tomorrow at Bella Vista Golf Course. The Thunder trail Hope College by 20 strokes for the MIAA Title and automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The team with the lowest total score over the four MIAA Jamborees in the fall and the two rounds of the MIAA Spring Final today and tomorrow, May 8th, will earn the automatic qualification.
