ALMA, Mich. – The Trine University Men's Track and Field team won their fifth consecutive outdoor MIAA Championship and eleventh straight between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Ethan Spahr and
Zion Jackson each had performances for the history books, each setting a program record and combining for 95.5 of Trine's 205 points. The top 8 performers in each event scored points toward the team championship.
Spahr, who claimed the MIAA decathlon title last week, added wins in the pole vault, long jump and javelin throw. He finished second in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump. He tallied 53 points in the meet and finishes his career with 205 career MIAA Championship points, the most in program history both by a male and overall. He topped the men's mark set by
Jake Gladieux of 192 and the overall mark by Evie Miller (Bultemeyer) of 202.5.
He started in the vault with a new personal best of 4.60 meters/15' 1" and moved to #4 all-time while defending his title from indoor season in the event. In the long jump pit, a leap of 6.93 meters/22' 9" took the win and again, he defended his indoor title. In the javelin he bettered his #4 all-time mark to 53.04 meters/174' and in triple jump he bettered his #3 performance to 13.63 meters/44' 8.75". Finally, in the high jump he moved up to #2 all-time with a leap of 1.98 meters/6' 6.75".
Jackson was equally as impressive, scoring 42.5 points and smashing the program record in the 200-meter dash in 21.39 seconds. He took the win in the 110-meter hurdles and then teamed up with
Max Harris,
Jayjouir Roberts, and
Braden Estep for a MIAA meet record in the 4x100-relay of 41.17 seconds. Jackson was second in the 100-meter dash and long jump and took third in the triple jump.
Thursday's events began with the pole vault where
Matthew Schaefer,
Morgan Johnson, and
Blake Lude joined Spahr for a 1-3-4-6 finish. Schaefer set a personal best of 4.16 meters/13' 7.75" for third, Johnson was fourth with a jump of 4.06 meters/13' 3.75" and Lude took sixth, clearing 3.91 meters/12' 10".
Johnson teamed up with Spahr and Jackson in the long jump, finishing 1-2-8. Jackson was second with a leap of 6.81 meters/22' 4.25" and Johnson was eighth, covering 6.23 meters/20' 5.25".
In the hammer throw,
Dillon Dennison launched himself up to #5 in Trine history with a toss of 53.59 meters/175' 10" and finished second.
AJ Henderson heaved a personal best of 47.58 meters/156' 1" for sixth and
Trace Stookey was seventh with a toss of 47.40 meters/155' 6".
Day one featured a handful of running finals as well. Trine set three new top-10 marks in the 10,000-meter run.
Max Van Huis took second in 31:26.81, moving to #5 all-time.
Joseph Packard was fourth in 31:34.54,
Blake Overmyer was seventh and now checks in at #7 on the top-10 list after finishing in 31:45.37.
Robert Lohman crossed sixth and now owns the #10 spot with a time of 32:00.29.
Tanner McMain set seventh best time in program history with a 9:49.75 performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He placed fifth.
The field events were again up first on Friday. Johnson finished eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.80 meters/5' 10.75".
Stookey and
Collin Brady were sixth and eighth in the discus throw with tosses on 43.26/141' 11" and 43.19 meters/141' 8". The men are now #4 and #5 all-time.
Brady and
Colton Zableckis were seventh and eighth in the javelin. Brady launched the javelin 46.92 meters/153' 11" and Zableckis tossed 45.59 meters/149' 7".
In the running events, Estep and Roberts added third and sixth place finishes to Jackson's silver in the 100-meter dash finishing in 10.81 and 11.0 seconds. Estep again took third in the 200-meter dash in 21.80 seconds.
Philip Nemecek and
Tyler Hartleroad took fourth and sixth in the 800-meter run.
Max Van Huis established a new #3 all-time mark in the 1500-meter run of 3:53.23 for a second place finish.
In the 5000-meter run,
Joseph Packard and
Nicholas Spielman took fifth and seventh.
The 4x400-meter relay team of
Blane Johnson, Nemecek, Johnson, and Hartleroad took fifth in 3:25.51.
A small group of individuals will continue competing the next two weeks for qualifying marks toward the NCAA Championships on May 22-24.
