Besner Leads Men's Golf at John Carroll

CHARDON, Ohio – The Trine University men's golf team finished in third place at the John Carroll University Caschera-DiCillo Classic. Trine tallied 603 strokes in the 36 hole tournament finishing behind Kenyon and the host Blue Streaks. Jack Besner led the Thunder with a seventh place finish.
 
Besner finished three over par with 147 strokes for the tournament. Besner opened day one with a one-under 71, he finished the front nine at one over with birdies on three, six, and eight. He got going on the back nine with a birdie on twelve, an eagle on the 540-yard par five fourteenth set the tone for the final four holes. He made birdie on fifteen and eighteen with pars in between.
 
He started day two with five consecutive pars before adding another birdie on six, a bogey on eight sent him to even par headed to the second nine. Besner parred seven holes on the back nine and finished with a four over 76 on day two.
 
Fellow freshman Jake Bilby finished 10th for the Thunder with a two day total of 148. He opened day one with a 75 that saw six pars on the front nine before knocking in three birdies on the back. He bested holes ten, fourteen, and eighteen to finish the back nine at even par.
 
He added birdies on fourteen and eighteen again on day two along with holes four and sixteen. His three birdies on the back nine helped him finish two under for the half and card a 73 on day two.
 
Carter Schnipke finished 25th for Trine. A spectacular day one featured 15 pars and a birdie on the 407-yard par four fifth, as the junior finished with a 73. Day two saw Schnipke card out with an 80 and make 11 pars.
 
Garrett James was 30th for Trine with a two day total of 155. James made birdie on six, twelve, and fourteen, but the highlight of the day came on fifteen. He took advantage of the short, 311-yard par four and made eagle to help finish the back nine one under. James again birdied fourteen on day two as he also finished with an 80.
 
Also competing for Trine were Asher Caldwell and Trevor Vietti, Caldwell finished 33rd with a two day score of 156 and Vietti was 63rd with a 166.
 
Trine will host the MIAA Spring Final next Wednesday and Thursday at the Bella Vista Golf Course in Coldwater, Mich.
