GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Ethan Spahr claimed the inaugural Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Decathlon title on Wednesday afternoon at Calvin University. The event is the first of the MIAA Championships scheduled for next Thursday.
Spahr led the meet wire to wire after winning the first event, the 100-meter dash, on Tuesday. He set one of five personal bests in the race, crossing in 11.16 seconds. He followed that with event wins in the long and high jump before posting another personal best in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 51.69 seconds. He tallied 3,604 points on day one. Spahr started day two strong with a personal best in the discus and continued that momentum with an event win in the javelin throw. His time of 5:06.28 in the final event, the 1500-meter run, was also a personal best. He finished with 6,639 points for his PB of the event. He currently ranks 7
th in NCAA Division III.
Morgan Johnson took third in the event and tallied seven personal bests. Johnson also started with a PB in the 100-meter dash, he added two more on day one in the high jump and 400-meter dash. He cleared 1.79 meters/5' 10.5" and covered 400 meters in 52.46 seconds. He added day two bests in the 110-meter hurdles, 17.12 seconds, discus throw, 25.97 meters/85' 2", and the 1500-meter run, 4:57.40. He totaled a personal best 5,818 points and ranks 43
rd in NCAA Division III.
Adrianne Jackson competed in the inaugural MIAA women's heptathlon and placed sixth. She set six personal bests along the way. In the high jump she cleared 1.30 meters/4' 3.25", she threw 9.51 meters/31' 2.5" in the shot put, and broke the tape in the 200-meter dash in 28.24 seconds. She added two more personal bests in the javelin throw and 800-meter run. She tossed the javelin 24.60 meters/80' 8" and won the 800 in 2:31.83.
The rest of the Thunder Track and Field team will head to Hillsdale College on Friday for one final tune-up before next weeks MIAA Championships.
