MEQUON, Wis. – The Trine University acrobatics and tumbling team came up just shy of a come from behind victory, falling to their hosts from Concordia University Wisconsin 228.175 to 223.030. The score is nearly a 50-point improvement over their first competition of the season.
The Thunder had their worst event of the day to start, falling in Compulsory 32.65-26.5. Nearly all of that lead came from the first heat, where the team posted a 3.0. They quickly rebounded from the struggle and posted back-to-back nines with a 9.05 in the pyramid heat and a 9.15 in the toss heat.
The team nearly matched the Falcons during the Acro Event, coming in just .6 of a point back with a 24.3. They had solid scores in all three heats, surpassing eight in both the first and third heats and then winning the second heat with a 7.7.
Trine then had a historic showing in the Pyramid Event, posting the second-best score ever with a 28.7, winning the event by a full point. Their second heat score of 9.7 was also second best for the program and in the first heat they tied for sixth with a 9.35. Despite the comeback effort Concordia took an 85.15 to 79.50 lead into halftime.
The Thunder dropped around a point in each of the next two events. In the Toss, they scored a 24.25 with the highlight coming the first heat where their 8.75 was a top ten performance. They finished the tumbling passes with a 38.35, the best score coming in the aerial pass with a 7.55.
The Team Event was another win for Trine, but not quite enough of a win to overcome the deficit in the total score. The Thunder posted a score of 80.93 for the day.
Trine falls to 1-2 following the loss. They will next take the mats when they host West Liberty University at home on Friday, February 28. The home opener is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
