TIFFIN, Ohio – The Trine University men's wrestling team secured their first dual victory of the season at the Berg Holiday Duals hosted by Heidelberg University. They defeated Mount St. Joseph University 41-11 and was close against two other opponents.
The day opened with a match against the hosts from Heidelberg. Kaden Golder started the team with a 17-1 tech fall victory and the 5-0 lead. The other bonus points came at 157 where Austin Crowder won 16-0 for another tech fall. Caden Garza, Lakin Webb and Davin George each won by decision to build the teams final score. The Student Princes took the dual 23-19.
Millikin University handed Trine the only lopsided result of the day, winning 36-7. Golder won again with a major decision with the other points coming from Webb who had a second decision.
The Thunder rebounded with their win over the Lions. Ben Edwards won the first contested match, after Golder received a forfeit, taking the 133 match by major decision. After a pair of wins by MSJ, the Thunder won the last six matches to secure the victory. Crowder, George and Gavin Malone all had victories by fall, while Jacob Saylor and Nayl Sbay had tech fall wins. Webb won again by decision at 165.
Trine ended the day with a heartbreaking loss to Otterbein University by the score of 26-25. Golder finished the day undefeated with a tech fall followed closely by Edwards securing a win by fall, building a 11-0 lead. The next three matches went to the Cardinals who took an 17-11 lead. Webb won another decision followed by a tech fall for Sbay to retake the lead at 19-17. Otterbein won at 184 by decision taking a slim lead before securing the match with a pin at 197. George finished the dual with a victory by fall at 285 to give the final score.
The Thunder finish the day 1-5 in dual matches. They will next take the mats when they travel to face Cornerstone (Mich.) University on Tuesday, January 13. That dual is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
