ALMA, Mich. – The Trine University women's golf team claimed the win at MIAA Jamboree #4 this afternoon. Trine defeated Saint Mary's College by two strokes to pull within one shot of the conference lead heading into the season break.
Rylee Smith led the Thunder with an eighth-place finish, shooting 76.
The Thunder are now one shot behind Saint Mary's following the completion of the MIAA fall competitions. The 36-hole MIAA Spring Final will determine the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships. The team with the lowest total strokes through the four fall jamborees and the 36-hole Spring Final will be crowned MIAA Champions and earn the conference's automatic NCAA berth.
Smith fired a 76 to follow up her school record round from Monday. Smith holds steady atop the MIAA Individual standings. She made two birdies in an up and down day. A stretch of five holes from seventeen to three saw her make four pars and one birdie.
Grace Thiele and
Natalie Kulka both shot 78. Kulka made three birdies and seven pars, including a birdie on the 511-yard par five fourth. Thiele made both of her birdies on par fives, the 476 yard twelfth and 453 yard eighteenth.
Cassidy Hawken rounded out the Thunder's scorecard with a 79. Hawken made 11 pars for a very consistent round.
The team total of 311 strokes ranks third best in program history and Thiele's round of 78 ties for the 10
th best round by an individual.
