ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's wrestling team earned their first points in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) but came up short of visiting Adrian College by the score of 35-9.
After the first two matches of the dual went to the Bulldogs by tech fall, the Thunder were sorely in need of a momentum swing.
Tommy Miller came to the mat for the 141 match looking to just that. After a back-and-forth first period, Miller started to assert himself in the second ultimately scoring a takedown and securing a pin at the 3:48 mark.
The next two matches were convincing wins for Adrian, bringing
Philip Burney to the mat looking to again shift the tide. He came up just short, on the back of a single takedown by the Bulldogs, coming barely inside of the clock and mat at the end of the first period.
Another close call for Trine came at 197, where
Xander Matz-Lachance almost completed an impressive comeback after trailing 8-3 in the first period. He ultimately lost just 8-5.
Kyler Bills earned the final team points at 285. He scored an early takedown and then built up two minutes of ride time in the first period. He ultimately battled to a 5-0 decision.
The Thunder fall to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in MIAA play following the dual. Members of the team will next take the mats when they travel to the Wabash Invite on Saturday, February 1.
