Men's Wrestling Picks Up Three Wins

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Trine University men's wrestling team won three matches hosted by Heidelberg University, one against their host followed by matches against the University of Mount Union and Thomas More University.

The team opened the day against the Student Princes picking up a 36-17 win. Four members of the team won with pins to lead the way to the victory including Philip Burney, Ben Shaffer, Jacob Saylor and Kyler Bills. Tommy Miller won with a 15-0 tech fall for five points and Karrington Cooper had a major decision 14-6 for four. Lakin Webb rounded out the scoring with a 9-7 decision at 157.

In the second match of the day the Thunder defeated the Purple Raiders 27-23. After dropping the first two matches, surrendering bonus points each time, the Thunder won the next six to secure the victory. Gavin Malone posted a pin at 184 to put the match out of reach. Miller added a second pin for the day at 141. Burney had a 17-0 tech fall for five points and Christopher Briner had a 14-6 major decision for four. Webb and Shaffer rounded out the scoring with three points each.

The Saints won three of the first four matches, but Trine took the rest, earning six points each time to win the dual 42-17. Ben Edwards, Webb, Shaffer and Saylor each had pins for their bonus points while Burney, Malone and Bills wone uncontested matches.

The Thunder improve to 6-2 overall following the successful outing. They will open the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) portion of their season when they next take the mats. They are scheduled to travel to The University of Olivet on Thursday, January 16. That dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
