ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University softball team is just one win away from a trip to the super-regional round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Softball Championship tournament after earning a spot in the regional championship game with a 2-0 win over the University of Mount Union.

The battle between the last two undefeated teams in the Angola, Ind. Regional was a showcase of strong pitching. Both staring pitchers went all seven innings and allowed less than five hits. For the Thunder, Alexis Michon was in the circle. The senior finished with the shutout win while allowing just three hits and a walk. She struck out eight Purple Raiders in the game.

Trine only had seven baserunners of their own in the contest with Mount Union's Kendyll Cahill turning in her own great performance in the circle.

The Thunder were able to put enough of those baserunners together to score a pair of runs. The first came off a double down the right field line by Tyra Marcum. Her lone hit of the game brought Karley Trine home all the way from first base.

The team scored again in the fourth inning, to build their 2-0 lead. This time Macy Rocha reached on a leadoff single before giving way to Emily Wheaton on the basepaths. The senior speedster quickly stole second and drew an error from the catcher to reach third. She was able to scamper home on Emma Beyer's sacrifice fly to left field.

The Thunder improve to 41-3 following the victory. The Purple Raiders fell to the elimination side of the bracket following the loss. They met Westminster (Pa.) College in the final game of the day and came up with a win to send the Titans home. Mount Union with the win will face Trine again in the championship game, which is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m.
