SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Trine University men's wrestling team posted a strong showing at the 2024 Berg Holiday Duals hosted by Heidelberg University. The Thunder finished the day with a 3-1 record as a team, improving to 3-2 in dual matches for the season.
The team opened the day against Waynesburg University and earned a convincing 29-14 victory. Karrington Cooper, Ben Edwards and Philip Burney each earned six points for Trine, Burney and Edwards each with pins while Cooper was uncontested. Also earning bonus points for the team was Tommy Miller in the 141 match. He won 15-0 for the tech fall victory and five points. Lakin Webb and Davin George finished off the scoring with wins by decision.
The Thunder followed up with a 28-22 victory against Penn State University Behrend. After the first four matches the contest was tied at 12 apiece, with Edwards and Miller each accounting for six. The Lions won at 157 to take a 16-12 lead, before Trine came back with wins by decision for Burney and Ben Shaffer along with a major decision by Gavin Malone making the score 22-16. Behrend tied the match again with a late pin in the 197 pound match, before Kyler Bills sealed the win for the Thunder with a pin in the 285 match.
The lone loss of the day came against John Carroll University by the score of 39-12. Webb at 157 and Burney at 165 each recorded pins for the team to secure the 12 points.
Trine finished the day with a 35-18 victory against their hosts. Jacob Saylor, Shaffer and Burney each won with pins to build 18 points toward the team score. Miller added five more with a 16-0 tech fall victory. Cooper, Webb and George each recorded major decisions to finish off the team total.
