Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. –The Trine University women's soccer scored goals in the first and last five minutes of play to secure a 2-0 victory over visiting Saint Mary's College.
The first goal of the contest came two minutes into the match, but two hours after the scheduled start time. The start of the game was delayed due to inclement weather and began in pouring rain before it calmed around halftime.
The weather didn't seem to affect the Thunder. Senior Olivia Argentieri drove into the offensive zone ending up near the corner. Her cross was perfect landing in front of the net nearly on the foot of Abby Robison. The sophomore quickly fired a shot past the goalkeeper to give the team a 1-0 lead.
The game settled following the goal with both team's struggling to get into the offensive zone. The only other shot on goal in the half went against Trine, with junior Sophie Aschemeier making the save.
The Belles applied their strongest pressure in the start of the second half. In the first ten minutes they forced another save from Aschemeier and then banged a shot off the crossbar that bounced down forcing another play from the keeper.
Despite the attempts neither team scored until the final three minutes of the game. Saint Mary's committed a foul deep in their own offensive zone, giving Trine a free kick from nearly the corner. Junior Bella Mabry took the attempt and curved the ball into the goal area. Freshman Reganne Koskela deflected the pass into the back of the net to give the team the 2-0 lead.
The Thunder improve to 5-2-4 overall and 1-0-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition. They will travel to face Hope College in their next match which is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 30.
