Thunder Draw with Scots

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Trine University women's soccer team earned its first draw of the season this afternoon at Maryville College (Tenn.). The 2-2 decision moves the Thunder to 1-2-1 on the season. Ava Leihgeber and Maggie McDowell scored the goals for Trine. The game was the first matchup between the two programs.

Trine struck first in the fifth minute. The Thunder earned a free kick that found Reagan Vokal who passed to the right foot of Maggie McDowell who buried the goal. The Scots were quick to answer with a shot on goal just a minute later that was saved by Johannah Houtkooper. Maryville then earned a pair of corners, the second found pay dirt to level the score in the 14th minute.

Maryville assumed the lead in the 48th minute with a shot to the bottom center of the goal. Trine responded by going on the attack, dominating the possession for the next 14 minutes and eventually earning a free kick. Ava Leihgeber tied the game with a shot to the top left of the Scots goal that evened the score at two in the 63rd minute. Neither team was able to break the tie, the Thunder defense stood tall only allowing two shots the rest of the way, blocking one and the other was off target. Trine's best opportunity came in the 80th minute when Erin Scully forced a save from the Scots keeper.

The Thunder return to action tomorrow against Sewanee. The game is set for 12 p.m. and will be played at Maryville.
