Baseball Downed in Extra Innings

Box Score

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Trine University baseball team fell in extra innings on Thursday afternoon 7-6 to Waynesburg University. The Thunder had the lead in the late innings, but ultimately it was the Yellow Jackets who got the upperhand and came away with the victory. Trine falls to 4-5 and have lost each of the last three games. Waynesburg improves their record to 2-4.

The first two innings went scoreless as starting pitcher Luke Cline worked around a bases loaded jam in the first and a runner in scoring position in the second. In the third, the Thunder were able to plate the first run of the game. Avery Fulford doubled to leadoff the inning and moved over to third thanks to a flyball out by Matt Weis. A wild pitch allowed Fulford to advance the final 90 feet.

The Yellow Jackets answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 2-1 lead, but just as quickly Trine scored two more in the top of the fourth. Matthew Martin, Robert Kortas and Easton Rhodes worked to load the bases with a pair of singles and a hit by pitch and a wild pitch moved everyone up. A Tyler Beyke groundout would result in the second run later in the frame.

The Thunder extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth. Consecutive base on balls by Martin and Dalton Nikirk once again resulted in runs on a wild pitch and groundout. This time it was Rhodes collecting the RBI.

Waynesburg chased Cline from the game in the bottom half of the sixth with two hits to start the inning and both came around to score on a single to center field. Kortas worked to single-handedly score an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a walk, then two stolen bases and scored on an error from behind the plate.

The Yellow Jackets scored a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings thanks to three extra base hits and tied the game up at six. To start extra innings, Trine reached base twice off of Waynesburg errors, but were unable to break the tie. An untimely wild pitch allowed a batter to reach base after a strikeout for the Yellow Jackets in the tenth. Waynesburg advanced the baserunner on a sacrifice bunt and a single by the next hitter drove in the winning run.

Daniel Rumberger was successful in turning the lineup over at 3-for-4. Martin and Kortas were able to reach base twice each with a hit and walk. On the mound, Cline struck out seven in his five innings on the bump while Jack Villarreal and Noah Brettin (1-1) came out of the Thunder bullpen for the final four innings.

The spring break trip concludes for Trine tomorrow morning with a doubleheader versus Penn State University-Altoona. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
