Thunder Shutout the Opposition on Day Two in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – The Trine University softball team remained undefeated after a pair of shutout victories. They began with a 10-0 run-rule victory over Penn State Behrend followed by a 5-0 win over Lebanon Valley College.

Freshman Debbie Hill recorded the first run of the game with an RBI-single in the first inning against the Lions. Junior Scarlett Elliott followed up with a fielder's choice that brought in a second in the same inning.

In the second inning, senior Ellie Trine recorded a two-run homer and classmate Amanda Prather brought in another by forcing an error at first base.

The team put Penn St.-Behrend down to their final outs in the fourth. Hill recorded another RBI on a double and then a few batters later junior Giselle Riley recorded a grand slam to make the score 10-0.

In addition to her work in the batters' box, Hill had a great game in the circle. She faced just 16 batters, one more than the minimum and allowed one hit while walking one. She finished the game with 10 strikeouts, including two in the final inning to help close out the game.

The Thunder took advantage of errors in their second game, scoring four runs on mistakes by the other team. Prather and junior Emily Wheaton both forced throwing errors by the Dutchmen's catcher to bring in the lead runner. Ellie Trine and sophomore Emma Beyer each forced errors by the third baseman brining in two more runs.

Freshman Karley Trine was the lone member of the team to bring in an earned run. She recorded a team-high three hits in the game and recorded the RBI on her third single in the sixth inning. That run got the score up to 5-0 which would go final after a scoreless bottom of the sixth and seventh.

In the circle, junior Alexis Michon pitched a strong game to record the shutout. She allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out seven in the contest.

Trine improves to 4-0 overall following the pair of wins. They will continue their season tomorrow, Monday, March 5. They were originally set to take the field at 9 a.m. against Hiram College to begin the day, but that game has been canceled. Instead the team will begin against Aurora University at 11:30 a.m. before making a quick turnaround against Heidelberg University at 2 p.m.
