Box Score 2 ANGOLA, Ind. - The Trine
University Softball team came back from a two run deficit to win
their first game in the MIAA tournament on their home field, with a
final score of 5-2, defeating St. Mary's College. The top
ranked team in the regional poll put out by the NCAA today,
improves to 35-6 on the season.
St. Mary's got on top early putting one run
on the board in each the second and third inning.
Trine wouldn't get their bats going until
the bottom of the fourth, as junior Lauren Harris (Uniontown,
Ohio/Hoover) started things off with a home run to left field that
cleared the first row of cars in the parking lot. Sophomore Haleigh
Daniels (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) would follow up with a single
before being thrown out on a fielder's choice hit by junior
Lindsey Wise (Oregon, Ohio/Clay).
A single by sophomore Jamie Lydick (Plainfield,
Ind./Plainfield) would move Wise to second, before both runners
were brought in from a double to center by senior Kelly Tresick
(Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse). Tresick would then be
brought around to score by a single to center by freshman Carly
Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey).
The Thunder would put one more run up on the
board for good measure in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Andi
Gasco (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) started things off with a double
down the left field line. She would then be brought in by a double
from Harris.
Tresick, Harris and Junior Sarah Belote (Bronson,
Mich./Bronson) led the offense with 2 hits each in the first game.
Harris and Tresick each added 2 RBI while Searles added a hit and
RBI of her own.
Gasco earned the win on the mound moving her to
19-3 on the season. Pitching the complete game, Gasco allowed both
earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.
Trine then took on Alma College in the
winner's bracket. The game was suspended due to lightning in
the bottom of the six with Alma coming to bat leading 4-1. The game
will resume tomorrow, April 4 at 10:00 a.m.
The Scots scored two runs in the first and second
innings to take an early lead. Both runs in the first inning were
scored with two outs while another in the second was unearned.
Gasco started for the Thunder but lasted just 1
2/3 innings before freshman Bree Fuller (Hubbardston,
Mich./Fulton) came on in relief.
Trine plated their only run thus far in the
fourth after a leadoff walk by freshman Tori Cuebas
(Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield). Pinch runner Paxton
Fleming (Boulder City, Nev./Boulder City) would reach
third on a double by Harris, then score on a suicide squeeze by
Wise.
Trine will look to make a comeback in the seventh
as they look to advance to the championship game, rather than being
forced to play four games in the day to take the title. The loser
of the Trine/Alma game will face Adrian College at noon.
