GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It
was a tough day for the Trine University men's tennis team as they
fell to MIAA opponent Calvin College 8-1. With the loss the Thunder
drop to 10-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The Thunder encountered a tough opponent as they
dropped all three of the doubles matches to the Knights. Junior
Dan Desper (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) and sophomore
Joe Dunbar (Carmel, Ind./Blessed Theodore Guerin) lost at first
doubles 8-6. Sophomore Nick Ihrie (Kendallville,
Ind./East Noble) and junior David Murray (Bolingbrook,
Ill./Bolingbrook) fell 8-1 and junior Trevor Derby (Kendallville,
Ind./East Noble) and freshman Joey Clark (Sturgis, MI/Sturgis)
dropped the third doubles match 8-0.
The singles matches started a lot better for the
Thunder, but only Dunbar was able to get a victory; he won at first
singles 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. Desper fell in a tough match at second
singles 7-6, 6-3 and Murray lost a battle at third singles 6-4,
6-4. Freshman Joey Clark (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) fell at fourth
singles 6-2, 6-2 and Ihrie dropped the number five match 6-2,
6-1. Derby played his first singles match since his injury in
February and lost in the third set at sixth singles 6-3, 1-6,
7-5.
Trine will return to the court on April 11 as
they battle it out with conference foe Adrian for a 4:00 p.m.
match.
