Box Score 2 ALBION, Mich. - It was a
perfect day for the Trine University softball team as they clinched
their first MIAA Regular Season Championship since 2009 as they
swept Albion College 6-0 and 9-5. The 15th ranked Thunder improve
to 34-6 on the season and finish 15-1 in the MIAA.
Starting pitcher, junior Andi Gasco
(Levering, Mich./Petoskey) never allowed the Britons
offense to get going as she allowed just two hits in the game,
giving Trine the chance to clinch the title.
Junior Lindsey Wise (Oregon,
Ohio/Clay) gave the Thunder all the offense they would need
with two outs, as she delivered on her first home run of the season
in the top of the second.
Gasco would lead off the fourth inning with a
solo home run of her own, her 11th of the year, setting a new
school record. Trine would then get back-to-back walks from
freshman Tori Cuebas (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield) and
junior Lauren Harris (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover). After a
failed suicide squeeze attempt, pinch runner sophomore Paxton
Fleming (Boulder City, Nev./Boulder City) would score
on an error by the Albion second baseman.
The Thunder would homer again in the fifth as
junior Sarah Belote (Bronson, Mich./Bronson) launched
her fifth of the season on a shot to right center.
Trine would tack on two more in the sixth, both
coming with two outs. Freshman Carly Searles (Levering,
Mich./Petoskey) singled and Belote followed with a double to
score her. After a walk to Gasco, Cuebas singled to left, scoring
Belote.
On the mound, Gasco earned her 18th win of the
season with the shutout, allowing two hits while striking out
eight.
At the plate, Belote was the only Trine player to
collect multiple hits in game one, going 3-4 with two runs scored
and two RBI. Trine collected nine hits as Wise was the only other
player to collect multiple RBI with two.
Game two didn't start the way the Thunder
wanted after clinching the conference title, as Trine had to battle
back after the Britons took a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Trine got two back in the bottom of the second on
a home run by Harris that scored Cuebas who had reached on a
walk.
The Thunder were able to put some distance
between the teams as senior Kelly Tresick (Clinton Township,
Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led off the inning with a single.
Searles would then double and Belote would walk to load the bases.
Gasco would step in and deliver a double to score Tresick and
Searles. Cuebas would then lift a sacrifice fly to center, scoring
Belote and Harris would follow suit with a sacrifice fly to left
scoring Gasco.
Albion would score twice in the fifth inning on a
home run to pull within one, but that be as close as they would
come.
In the bottom of the inning, Cuebas would start
off the inning with a walk. Harris would then deliver a long fly
ball to left field; the ball would hit off the Albion
fielder's glove and bounce over the wall for her second home
run of the game to put the Thunder up by the final score.
Searles started the game but lasted just one
inning, allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out
two. Freshman Bree Fuller (Hubbardston, Mich./Fulton)
came on the pitch the final six innings, allowing two earned runs
on seven hits while striking out a season-high nine batters.
Harris delivered one of her best games on the
season going 3-3 including two, two-run home runs, driving in a
season-high five and scoring twice. Tresick and Searles each
collected two hits in the game while Gasco drove in two.
Trine finishes 14-0 in road games for the season
with the sweep, including 10-0 in the conference for the first time
under coach Donnie Danklefsen. Trine's 15-1 conference record
is the best mark by an MIAA team since 2006 when Hope finished
15-1.
With the MIAA regular season concluded for the
Thunder, Trine tied or broke four MIAA records this season. The
team set the single season mark for total bases with 264, breaking
the mark of 253 set by Saint Mary's in 2010. The squad tied
the record for most home runs in a conference season with 20, tying
the mark set by Alma in 2008.
Individually, Gasco tied the conference record
for hits in a season with 29, which she now shares with two other
players. Her sister, Searles, also tied a conference record with
four triples, which is shared with six other players.
Trine will now move on to the MIAA Conference
Tournament that they will host May 3-4. The first game between the
2nd and 3rd seeds will begin at 11 a.m., with the Thunder taking on
the 4th seed at 1:00 p.m. on May 3.
