THUNDER TIE HOME RUN RECORD IN SWEEP OF COMETS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANGOLA, Ind. - It was another offensive explosion for the 16th ranked Trine University softball team as they swept their way to 10-2 and 12-0 victories over Olivet College. The wins improve the Thunder to 27-5 on the season and 9-1 in the MIAA to remain in first place.

Game one saw the Thunder get things going in the bottom of the first as senior Kelly Tresick (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led off the inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey), fellow freshman Leah Hall (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) would drive in Tresick with a single to right. Junior Andi Gasco (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) would then deliver another single for the Thunder to score Hall.

Trine opened the game up in the third as they batted around the lineup.

Searles would lead off the inning with a triple to left center. Hall would step in and hit a rocket that hit off the fair pole for her second home run in as many games. Gasco would again single and then with one out, fellow junior Sarah Belote (Bronson, Mich./Bronson) would reach on an infield single to the second baseman.

After a walk to junior Lauren Harris (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover), sophomore Haleigh Daniels (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) would come up with a single to right scoring Gasco and junior Lindsey Wise (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) would single up the middle to plate Belote. Harris would then be out at the plate on a fielder's choice before Daniels would score on a passed ball.

The scoring would continue for the Thunder in the fourth. Gasco would lead off the inning with a single before freshman Tori Cuebas (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield) would smash a home run over the left field wall for the second straight game and her fourth of the year.

The Comets would score their only runs of the day in the fifth, both of which came with two outs.

After failing to come up with the mercy rule in the fifth, Gasco would come through in the sixth and ended it on the second pitch she saw as she slugged her seventh home run of the season to deep left.

In the circle, Gasco improved her record to 16-2 on the season with the complete game, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out three.

Gasco also did it at the plate going 4-4 with three runs and two RBI. Wise was also perfect, with a 2-2 performance with an RBI. Hall had a solid game at the plate going 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Cuebas also knocked in two.

The second game saw a dominant pitching performance from Searles as she pitched a complete game shutout allowing just two Olivet hits, both of which came in the first inning. Searles would be perfect in the final four innings, not allowing a single batter to reach base as she finished the game with five strikeouts.

Trine scored early again as Gasco launched a two-out, two-run homer to left after Hall had reached on an Olivet error. The home run was the 27th of the season for the Thunder, tying the school record which was set just a season ago.

In the fourth, the Thunder would score another run in part to another Comets error. After Gasco walked to lead off the inning, a Comets error allowed her to advance to second on a groundball by Cuebas. Then with one out, Harris singled to back to the pitcher, and the Olivet first baseman could not handle the late throw from the pitcher, allowing Gasco to score.

Once again the Thunder would put the game away in the fifth as they put nine runs on the board as they collected eight hits in the inning.

Tresick would lead off the inning with a walk, and another Olivet error allowed Searles to reach base. Trine would rattle off six straight hits before recording an out.

With two outs, Olivet would make their sixth error of the game allowing the inning to continue. Hall and Gasco would cap off the big inning with back-to-back run scoring singles.

Gasco stayed perfect on the day, going 3-3 in game two, with three RBI and three runs. Hall once again went 2-4 in the game with two RBI and two runs. Harris also collected two hits in the game. In all, seven Trine starters collected 11 hits in the game.

Trine will travel to Calvin for another conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on April 21.
