ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's golf team had a banner day this afternoon at Zollner Golf Course, taking the win at the Ken Venturi Invitational. The win was just the first of a long list of accomplishments this afternoon. The team set new 18- and 36-hole program records with a final tally of 547 strokes, including just 272 over the final 18 holes.
Jake Bilby and
Lance Decker tied for medalist honors with a new individual 36-hole record of 134 strokes.
Trine finished first of four teams, topping Ohio Northern University, Alma College, and Marian-Ancilla Community College. Trine defeated ONU by 52 shots as the Thunder defended their home course in dominant fashion.
The Thunder put both the 18- and 36-hole records on notice in the first round of the day, carding a 275, tying the previous single round record and putting them well on pace for the 36 hole mark. The second round proved better than the first with Trine notching 272 strokes to take three of the previous standard, while demolishing the 36-hole mark by 29 shots in the meantime.
While Bilby and Decker finished the day with the new individual record, it was
Myles Secor who broke it first. The sophomore finished just before of his record-breaking counterparts with 137 strokes, one better than Jeff Huffman's record from 35 years ago. Secor's round included just one bogey that came on his sixth hole of the day. He followed it up with ten consecutive pars. Secor's second round was bogey free and saw him nail four birdies.
Bilby and Decker wrapped up their final holes shortly after, breaking the program record for the second and third time in just a handful of minutes. The duo each shot 67 in both rounds to reach the record book. Their rounds of 67 are tied for the fifth best single rounds in program history.
Decker, like Secor, had just one bogey on the day. He quickly made up for it with birdies on two of his next three holes to close the first round. His second round went bogey free and added four more birdies to push his final tally to nine on the day. Decker spent nearly the whole day with his score below par, the sophomore made birdie on his second hole to move his score to one under, and it was never higher than that the rest of the afternoon.
Bilby dropped in a dozen birdies on the day, finding the cup early on holes nine and ten in both rounds. The junior birdied ten different holes on the day and made 20 pars.
Jack Besner took fourth place with a round of 142 strokes to complete the sweep of the top four spots for Trine. The junior's round ranks tenth best over 36 holes in program history. Besner made four birdies on the day to go with 28 pars.
