ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's soccer team battled 90 minutes to a 1-1 draw with John Carroll University at Shive Field on Wednesday night.
Erin Scully netted a goal in the 32nd minute for the Thunder (1-2-3). John Carroll moves to 2-1-2 on the year.
Trine owned a slim 17-15 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Johannah Houtkooper made four saves in goal for Trine.
Trine controlled the possession for most of the first half earning four corner opportunities and six shots in the first 32 minutes, it was the seventh shot that found its way into the back of the Blue Streaks goal.
Maggie McDowell fired a shot that was blocked, and ricocheted to
Ava Leihgeber who headed the ball back to
Elly McClelland. McClelland crossed the ball in front of the goal and the Streaks keeper to
Erin Scully who redirected the ball into the goal, giving Trine a 1-0 lead. The Thunder took the lead into halftime.
Trine had their best opportunity to extend the lead in the 54
th minute. Scully took aimed toward a second goal from just inside the near corner of JCU's goal box, forcing a diving save from the keeper.
Kamryn Bowman found the rebound and fired a shot back toward the goal but was rejected by the Streaks keeper. Bowman again collected the ricochet and fired another shot that was again saved.
JCU scored in the 59
th minute to level the score.
Julia Benham fired a shot on goal in the next minute but was again turned away. Trine's final gasp came in the final 10 seconds, Scully sent in a corner kick that found
Kaeli Sterling who headed the ball toward the goal just before the final second ran off the clock. Her shot came up just high of the goal and the game ended with the score knotted at one.
Trine returns to Shive Field on Saturday when they host North Central College (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
