MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Trine University women's soccer team played to its second tie in as many days on Sunday afternoon at MC Soccer Complex against the University of the South. Trine (1-2-2) ended Sewanee's three-game unbeaten streak to start the season with the 1-1 draw.
Julia Benham found the back of the net in the 69
th minute to provide the goal for the Thunder. The Tigers owned a 13-7 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
Johannah Houtkooper made seven saves in goal for Trine.
Trine got off to a fast start, earning a corner kick in the first minute that was parlayed into a penalty kick opportunity after a Tiger was assessed a yellow card inside the goal box.
Kamryn Bowman took the shot for Trine but was unable to connect.
Kyra Graham found a shot on goal in the 17
th minute but was saved by the Tigers keeper. Houtkooper turned away a pair of shots from Sewanee in the half to preserve the tie heading to halftime.
Sewanee was again turned away by Houtkooper in the 54
th minute when the Tigers turned a corner opportunity into a pair of shots. Benham broke the stalemate in the 69
th minute with her second goal of the season. In the closing moments, Sewanee earned another corner kick and were able to cash in to force the tie in the 88
th minute.
Trine returns home this week for a pair of games. The first on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host John Carroll University and again at 7 p.m. on Saturday against Wittenberg University.
