OLIVET, Mich. – A two RBI single from
Luke Burford in the top of the ninth gave the Trine University baseball team a 6-4 lead, and ultimately, its fourth consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon. The Thunder (8-18, 4-3 MIAA) were led by five different players who recorded two hits in the game. Olivet falls to 12-10 (4-3 MIAA).
Reid Courtwright got the win on the mound with two strikeouts in two innings of work.
Evan Shoppell got the save, his second of the season. Burford,
Brody Bond, Nathan Gilmet,
Kai Jones, and
Dillon Carlquist each had two hits.
Olivet took a 3-0 lead over the first two innings but were answered swiftly in the third. Gilmet and Jones each drove in runs, Jones' hit went for an extra base and plated a pair. Bond, Gilmet, and Burford scored the runs.
Each team scored once in the sixth, Trine struck first with a right field bomb from Carlquist and the Comets scored an RBI single to level the score. Courtwright struck out a pair in the eighth to preserve the lead and Burford drove in the winning runs with a single to left field.
Cole Schmidthuber and
Luke Metzler touched home for Trine. Metzler was the pinch runner for Carlquist who reached on a single. Schmidthuber singled to the pitcher while Metzler advanced to third on an error. Schmidthuber stole second to set up Burford's 2 RBI single to win the game.
Trine hosts Alma College on Friday at Jannen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
