Baseball Outslugged by Scots

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University baseball team fell to Alma College in a 14-11 slugfest at Jannen Field on Friday afternoon. The Thunder (8-19, 4-4 MIAA) notched 17 hits, seven for extra bases in the loss. Alma moves to 18-9-1 (6-3 MIAA) with the win.

Cole Temple and Nathan Gilmet were the ring leaders of the offensive explosion. Temple came up a homerun shy of the cycle with a 5-of-5 effort at the plate. Gilmet was 4-of-5 with two doubles. Luke Burford added a two RBI triple and Cole Schmidthuber blasted a three-run shot in the second inning.

Alma took a 2-0 lead in the second inning but were immediately answered by the Thunder. Gilmet led off Trine's five run second with a single. Temple then legged out an RBI triple to score the first run. He scored in the next at bat with an RBI single from Kai Jones. Sam Beckham reached on a fielder's choice and Kyle Martin singled up the middle to set up Schmidthuber. The blast to right center field was the first of the year for the senior and gave Trine a 5-2 lead.

Alma posted a five-run inning of their own in the third to regain control. A sac fly from Jones pulled the Thunder within one. Alma added four more runs by the fifth inning and would have scored more if not for a pair of excellent defensive plays from Schmidthuber in centerfield. Trine cut into the lead in the seventh and eighth with two runs in each. Gilmet scored William Taczak on an RBI double and scored on an RBI single from Temple in the next at bat. Burford's triple scored the pair in the eighth.

Alma protected its lead in the ninth with two runs and put the Thunder away in the home half in four at bats.

The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Alma. The first game is set for a 1 p.m. start.
