ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University baseball team claimed a sweep of the Hope College Flying Dutch on Monday afternoon at Jannen Field. The Thunder (7-18, 3-3 MIAA) rode a six run fourth inning to claim the sweep of the Dutch (7-19, 1-6 MIAA).
Sam Beckham sparked the offense with a grand slam in the fourth frame.
Owen Mitchell got the win on the mound while
Henry Williams,
Cole Clements, and
Brody Bond were all excellent in relief.
Cole Temple paced the offense with three hits, including a three-run blast in the seventh inning. Temple hit .700 in the series and is hitting .400 since March 21.
Mitchell threw three scoreless innings to open the game, getting out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the first and a one-out two runners on situation in the second. He allowed one run in the fourth on a squeeze play. His offense responded in a big way posting six runs in the home half of the inning.
Kai Jones drove in the first run with a fielder's choice to third base to score
William Taczak.
Kyle Martin drove in the next run, also on a fielder's choice that left the bases loaded. Beckham stepped to the plate an launched a grand slam clear of the right center field fence to open up a 6-1 advantage for the Thunder. The Dutch responded with three runs in the fifth, two on a homer of their own to cut into the lead.
Williams struck out three over the next three innings to preserve the lead. In the seventh, Taczak singled and Bond doubled to set up
Cole Temple with an opportunity to expand the lead. He did so with a monster home run to left center field on the first pitch of the at bat that gave Trine a 9-4 lead. Hope added one run in the eighth but were unable to rally and Trine clinched its first sweep of an MIAA opponent since 2022 when they swept The University of Olivet.
Trine travels to Olivet on Wednesday to begin their midweek series with the Comets at 4 p.m.
