HOLLAND, Mich. – The Trine University baseball team snapped a 12 game slide on Good Friday in Holland, Michigan with a pair of wins over Hope College. Trine (6-18, 2-3 MIAA) took the pair 6-4 and 3-2 over the host Dutch (7-18, 1-5 MIAA).
Cole Temple led with four hits on the day and
Will Gimbel pitched a complete game in the second contest.
Dylan Jenkins got the win in game one, pitching 5.2 of 7 innings and allowing seven hits while striking out seven.
Evan Shoppell got the save, striking out the final batter. The offense backed up the effort on the mound, scoring twice in the first and never allowing the Thunder to trail.
Brody Bond notched one of his three hits in the game to drive in the first run.
Nathan Gilmet and
Kyle Martin both were hit by a pitch, Martin got the RBI after Gilmet loaded the bases.
After allowing a pair of runs in the second, Jenkins struck out the two of the next three batters to get out of the inning, his offense scored twice more in the third. Bond added another RBI single and Temple plated Bond with a sac fly.
Luke Burford added to the lead with an RBI single in the sixth and
William Taczak padded the lead with a sac fly. Shoppell entered the game with two outs in the seventh and struck out the final Dutch batter to end the game.
Gimbel pitched all nine innings in the second game, striking out five while allowing just two runs on six hits to earn the win. Temple notched three singles in the win and scored the first run,
Kai Jones drove him in with a base hit to right field. The Dutch scored the next two in the second and fourth to lead 2-1. Gimbel struck out the final batter in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings. Gilmet blasted a solo homer in the top of the seventh to level the score. Jones drove in the winning run in the ninth with a sac fly to centerfield that allowed Gilmet to cross home plate.
Trine hosts Hope in the final game of the series on Monday at 4 p.m. at Jannen Field.
